The Mixtape Chronicles — I’ve got a mixtape problem. (4 min. 2002) Directed, shot, and edited by Lester Alfonso for his doc series on the cultural artifact.

On Day 54, I think I’ve finally figured out what I want to do with the episode titles of The Mixtape Chronicles. Instead of just differentiating each installment by using the name of the interviewees, I can give each video a built-in description of what it’s about by putting it in the title. Calling this next one from the archive the Jason Bortnick episode of The Mixtape Chronicles (with special guest Joshua Rifkin) would only make sense to a handful of people out there in the world. For those who know them, these names will carry the same weight as, say, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. I imagine that this digital premiere is a really really big thing for, like, three people. Maybe I’m overestimating.

I think I’ll have to go back and change the titles on the Mixtape episodes that I published recently. It makes more sense. Grouped together on a page, the new titles will make each video stand out to reveal bits of their own story.

This “musical” episode shot in Victoria, B.C. is one of the lengthiest of them all at almost four minutes. We were shooting a project called Runes at the time and I just had to interrupt the proceedings to do this segment for the Mixtape story archive. Mixtape covers have to be talked about, obviously.

More soon! —LA
