Day 34 of 360 videos from my archive. Today’s video from 2005 shows a clip of Brian Wagner performing for SIDEWALK MOVIES — a [Sound+Vision] project I helmed for Artsweek Peterborough in 2005 by producing and curating the program.

I asked Brian Wagner to provide a score to my nearly hour-long silent film called Hexagon(e) for which I shot and edited hexagon shapes in my surroundings and in nature. It was meant to screen as kind of ritual to clear a hex from a place — Hex-A-Gone.

First screened in 2004 for the inaugural [Sound+Vision] event at Cinema 379 in downtown Peterborough, it was meant to be part of a ritual cleansing or “smudging” of the venue. It was noise band Full Metal Booty, in which Brian Wagner had been part, that provided the soundtrack for the screening that night.

Once a month, [Sound+Vision] showed not only old silent films by Buster Keaton and the like but also new silent films made by local filmmakers like Brian Mitolo and others, accompanied by a live musical performance by a local musician or band.

For SIDEWALK MOVIES, Brian Wagner was the first I saw to innovate the live performance by using a mirror to reflect the film to him so he could face the audience. You can spot the mirror in the video.

Brian Wagner, who passed away in 2014, left the indelible mark to those who got to know his creative, kind, and generous spirit. The experimental music and visual art scene in Peterborough lost one of its great champions in his passing. I wanted to post this to remember him well.

I’ll be posting more [Sound+Vision] performances to this same vid soon! Enjoy! — LA
