ReFrame Spark (1 min. 2019) Directed and animated by Lester Alfonso from art by Joe Andrus for ReFrame Film Festival; this was made to pitch an idea.

Day 10 of 360 videos from my archive. Today’s video was a test done to demonstrate my abilities as an animator by taking the graphic elements from the festival branding and style guide created by Joe Andrus and setting them in “motion” with an effect achieved through a video manipulation software called Modul8.

I was able to control different layers and apply different variables to each different graphic element within the frame simultaneously. These effects were done using knobs and faders. It was the fastest way for me to create the final master output that I would later use as a backdrop for text information. I also knew that putting the extra work on the sound design would support the overall illusion.

The original graphic design by Joe Andrus.
The graphic design by Joe Andrus comes to life in Lester Alfonso’s ReFrame Spark.

I had wanted to create a piece for projection in a movie theatre where it could suddenly cut into the dark with its abrupt light and sound — an ignition, a start, a spark — to usher the wave of more light projections to come. — LA
