The Creative Nonfiction Filmmaking Workshop was created by Lester Alfonso in response to an invitation from Kate Story to participate in The Bernie Martin Festival: A Certain Place in Peterborough 2016. Lester invited seniors in the community who had an interest but had no previous filmmaking experience to create a short film using only personal stories and photographs.

By showing his own films and the films that have inspired him, Lester Alfonso demonstrates the many ways of telling our stories with words and images.

The participants met once a week to screen a film and were sent away with homework assignments. At the end of six weeks, Lester put together a compilation of the group’s work and dubbed it “A Certain Place,” not only after the festival but also to evoke the film itself as a site of memory and a space for community.

The Creative Nonfiction Filmmaking Workshop will be starting again very soon.

The participants included Lorna Green, Anne Fischer, Rob Steinman, Kathleen Shea Gehmair, Rose Anne Sheehan, Wyatt Lamoureux, and was assisted by Angel Hamilton.

Lester will be screening his films and the films that have inspired him from filmmakers like Alan Berliner, Laurie Anderson, Chris Marker, Ross McElwee, and more.

Seats are limited. If you are interested, please join the mailing list. It’s simple and it won’t take long. Thanks!
